Ad¸le Goodman Clark 1882-1983 Artist and Virginia Suffragist Written and Performed By: Sydney Kendrick Setting: Richmond, Virginia, 1909 Stage Directions: Twenty-seven year old Adˇle Clark and her younger sister Gertrude (Trudi for short) are sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea each and a teapot. Adˇle is a bit nervous and bouncy, while Trudi seems to be calm and inquisitive. So I imagine mother has told you a little bit about what I've been up to. I love our Sunday tea times, a chance for us sisters to chat about ... all sorts of things.ŹOh! Do you need a refresh on your tea? No? Alright. ItÕs a lovely day isnÕt it? Yesterday was lovely, too. YesterdayŹwas a great day. Yesterday, I became the recording secretary for a new organization: The Equal Suffrage League of Virginia! I am so excited!! You know how invested I am in the Movement. YesterdayÕs meeting was . . . amazing. It filled everyone with so much hope. I love being surrounded by like-minded people, ready to fight for the right to vote! We were asked to reach out to people we know might be interested in becoming a member or supporting in any way. I am nervous about how the world is going to react, let alone father! ThatÕs why I wanted to talk to you, alone, because I don't want the whole family, especially father to know this just yet. I am still unsure about how mother will react. I think she will support the cause and I think she will, as long as father doesn't find out.Ź Trudi, I have a favor to ask. I need your help with mother Can you find a time, the right time, to ask mother for her support? I am afraid if I go to the house, father will start asking questions and if he were to find out, I think it would be the end of any support he has given me and create tension among the whole family. I know how invested you are in the Movement and can imagine a future, a different future for both of us Š I hope you will join me. But for now, will you do this? Will you speak to mother for me?
