{"id":415,"date":"2020-05-14T18:15:57","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T18:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/performinghistory.com\/womenandthevote\/?page_id=415"},"modified":"2020-05-18T17:36:28","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T17:36:28","slug":"penpals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/performinghistory.com\/womenandthevote\/penpals\/","title":{"rendered":"Pen Pals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-415\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-415-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-415-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-415-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Pen Pals<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first four weeks of the semester, students corresponded with assigned pen pals from the other university exclusively through handwritten letters, mailed\u00a0 through the post office.\u00a0 During the fourth week of the project, Radford University students came to Virginia Tech to meet their pen pals and take part in a joint rehearsal.\u00a0 Students were asked to share their thoughts on this exercise.\u00a0 Some responses have been edited for length. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students were instructed to refrain from looking up their pen pal on social media until they had met in person. I was not used to writing and sending letters. I learned the value of building a relationship through a conversation and the patience that was required from a world of communication before cell phones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt made me realize how difficult communication was before we had mobile devices because I would receive a letter from my pen pal when she had not even read my previous letter yet. It really put into context what the suffragists had to go through when communicating with each other and with politicians during the suffrage movement because they did not have instant communication like we do today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting to know someone... before we all met for the first time definitely helped to ease any nerves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was like Christmas every Friday when I got to open another letter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWaiting every week just to see what they would have to say created a healthy dose of anticipation for me. The thing is, it made me understand that with technology we can communicate so much faster!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI enjoyed sharing our playlists, experiences, and recipes [through our letters]. It was crazy, because the first day everyone met, it did not feel like we were meeting strangers but seeing longtime friends after time apart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI learned [about them] without looking through the lens of social media. . . . I am friends with them on various social medias, but I am grateful that my first impression was through snail mail \u2013 it made for a great foundation to a friendship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI enjoyed having a pen-pal more than I can express. It transported me to a time before technology...
